Ian Briggs
President
Ian Briggs started his Judo journey as an adult under the tutelage of Robert Griechen. Ian’s passion for Judo and his belief in giving back to the community has earned him the role of Head Sensei at Kokoro Judo Club in 100 Mile House, BC. Ian holds the rank of Sandan and is NCCP Dojo Instructor certified.
Off the mats, Ian continues to give back to the community through volunteer and leadership roles at non-profit groups including the Consulting Foresters of BC, Canadian Ski Patrol System and the Cariboo Regional Manger of B.C. Forestry Association.
Professionally, Ian is a registered Professional Forester and actively manages his Forestry Consulting company, Montane Forest Consultants Ltd.
Tetsu Takagaki
Treasurer
Tetsu started Judo as a child, training with his father and after taking a break from Judo in his teens, he picked up Judo again as an adult and earned his Shodan in 2021. Tetsu is an active member of the Nakashima Dojo where he trains, instructs and still practices Judo with his father.
Professionally, Tetsu is a Chartered Professional Accountant who has experience working in public accounting. He has worked as an auditor and tax accountant. Currently he is a senior manager at Crowe Mackay and Company Ltd. specializing in insolvency, restructuring and forensic accounting.
Mariko Glover
Director at Large
Mariko found judo later in life, starting in 2016 at the age of 40 when she was invited to try a judo class at a small martial arts and fitness studio. From there she was hooked and went on to train at Gathering Place Judo Club and Burnaby Judo Club before ultimately joining Peak Judo Club.
Mariko is an active competitor and has competed at the Canadian Open National Championships in the Veterans, Senior and Newaza divisions as well as the 2024 Veterans World Championships. Mariko earned the rank of Shodan in 2023 and is qualified as a NCCP Level 2 Dojo Instructor.
Outside of judo, Mariko works for the City of Vancouver as an Engineering Assistant for the Sewer Pump Station team.
Mitchell Wolfe
Director at Large
Mitchell Wolfe has been a dedicated member of the Abbotsford Judo Club since 2008, rising from grassroots beginnings to the international stage as a former Judo BC Provincial Team athlete and a National Team member. Promoted to shodan in 2015, Mitchell went on to earn titles including the 2020 Elite National Champion, the 2018 Open National Champion as well as being named Judo BC’s Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 2018. He trained at the Judo Canada Training Centre in Montreal, representing Canada at international events, and is currently an NCCP Competition Development Coach in Training. Outside the dojo, Mitchell works as a consultant supporting organizations in strategic growth and operational excellence—expertise he is eager to bring to the Judo BC Board of Directors to help strengthen the association and expand the reach of judo across the province.
Maaike Van Kooten
Director at Large
Maaike started judo with her Dad at the age of 6 at UBC Judo Club and has continued to practice judo wherever she goes. She competed in a few Junior and Senior Canadian National Championships and received her Nidan in 2016. Maaike has practiced judo as an adult in the Netherlands and the United States before coming back to B.C. and her home judo club – Victoria Judo Club where she helps teach and run the senior practices.
Professionally, Maaike is a researcher for the National Research Council Canada building instruments for large professional telescopes around the world.
