Sandra Hewson (Burnaby Judo Club) and Ramon Rodriguez (Burnaby Judo Club) won silver in the masters division at the 2012 Commonwealth Judo Championships held on January 23rd & 24th in Cardiff, Whales.
Hewson fought in a combined –70 and –78 Kg F5 and over pool. She threw Jenny Hussey (Nidan) from England with a very clean Ouchi-Gari that turned into Uchimata for ippon in her first match. She fought Kay Andrews (Sandan) from the UK in the final. Andrews is a past European, and World Masters champion from England. Hewson had to settle for silver after Andrews threw her for wazari and then transitioned into a hold down for another wazari.
Rodriguez’ first match was against Peter Hoar (Nidan) from England who has been competing as a Master for the UK for a long time in the European and World Masters championships. Rodriguez threw Hoar for ippon with Kosoto-Gake. He then met Simon Woods (Godan) from England in the final. Woods had been UK, European and World Master Champion on several occasions. Rodriguez lost the match after being thrown with a left-grip, right-side drop Seoi-Nage for ippon.
